Your legal rights

Here we have gathered the patient rights that are relevant to your medical treatment at the Epilepsy Hospital Filadelfia.

Access to Records

Access to records and the right to see what data is registered about you

Everyone who is 15 years or older can access their medical records. You should receive a response to your access request within seven days of its receipt.

Free Hospital Choice

As a patient, you can generally choose freely among all public hospitals (including the Epilepsy Hospital Filadelfia) throughout the country for your diagnosis and treatment. This right is known as free hospital choice.

Referral

The Epilepsy Hospital is covered by the provisions of free hospital choice. Examination and treatment at the Epilepsy Hospital can take place following a medical referral from a neurology department, pediatric department, private practicing specialist in neurology or pediatrics. Additionally, general practitioners have the right to freely refer patients to the Epilepsy Hospital.

Right to Quick Diagnosis

As a patient, you have the right to have your condition diagnosed within 30 days, if it is professionally possible.

Confidentiality

Hospital staff are bound by confidentiality – even towards your closest relatives. You decide whether and to whom the staff may disclose information. If you lose the ability to manage your own interests, staff may cooperate with your relatives or guardian.

Upon discharge and during outpatient visits, your general practitioner will be informed about your treatment. If you do not want this, please let us know. In all other cases, written consent from you is required to share health information for purposes other than treatment.

However, public authorities can obtain information about you from the hospital without your consent in certain situations.

Extended Free Hospital Choice

If your home region or the hospital you are referred to cannot offer you treatment within the applicable time limits, you may, in some cases, choose to receive treatment at the Epilepsy Hospital Filadelfia. This right is known as extended free hospital choice. It may include outpatient treatment at the Children’s Epilepsy Department, the Adult Epilepsy Department, or neurophysiological examinations at the Neurophysiological Clinic.

Your Options

Here we have gathered your options as a patient

Information and Consent

You always have the right to receive information about your health condition and any potential risks or side effects of examinations and treatments. A treatment cannot be initiated or carried out without your informed consent.

Contact Person

The Epilepsy Hospital assigns you a primary care physician (BAL) and a primary nurse for outpatient treatment. If hospitalization is needed, you will be assigned a primary care physician (BAL) and one or two healthcare staff members from the department as contact persons. They will collaborate with you to plan and manage your treatment during your stay.

View Your Medical Record

You can read what the Epilepsy Hospital has written about you in your medical record, and you can see blood test results and much more.
The record can be viewed on sundhed.dk or in the MinSundhed app. You need to log in with MitID to access it. The record can also be viewed on the Min Sundhedsplatform app and minsundhedsplatform.dk, where you can also write directly to the department.

Interpreter Assistance

You can receive interpreter assistance if you have a hearing impairment or do not speak Danish. Interpreter assistance is available during consultations and treatment at the hospital if it is a necessary prerequisite for your treatment process.

Transport Reimbursement

You can apply for transport reimbursement by contacting the nearest transport office in your region. The transport office will assess whether you are entitled to reimbursement of transport expenses for hospitalization, discharge, and outpatient check-ups at the Epilepsy Hospital.

Exchange of Health Information

You decide who the hospital may share/exchange your health information with. For example, your general practitioner receives information about your treatment (discharge summary) after discharge and outpatient visits. If you do not want this, please inform us. Additionally, you have the option to opt-out of:

  • Health professionals sharing health information with other health professionals for treatment purposes
  • Health professionals retrieving health information from electronic systems for treatment purposes
  • Health information being used for quality work
  • Exchange of health information by a doctor or nurse involved in the treatment for the purpose of documentation, education, and evaluation
  • Disclosure to a student participating in the treatment as part of their education, where disclosure is necessary for the student’s understanding of the treatment situation or evaluation of the student’s performance
  • Other persons, who are legally bound to confidentiality, retrieving information for treatment purposes or providing technical assistance for health professionals’ information retrieval

In all other cases, written consent from you is required for health information to be shared for purposes other than treatment. However, public authorities can obtain information about you from the hospital without your consent in certain situations.
