Special Counselling

Early intervention makes a difference

An early intervention can make a significant difference, which is why it is important to seek help. You can call us, send an email, or arrange for a personal consultation. We provide advice to professionals, citizens, and relatives who need help for children, adolescents, and adults with epilepsy.

We are happy to offer consultations regarding pedagogical/didactic compensatory measures in schools/educational institutions and residential facilities, etc. We also give professional presentations about the psychosocial consequences of epilepsy in daily life.

The special advisory service is closely linked to the Epilepsy Hospital, and we collaborate with a wide range of professionals.

Special Counselling

We come to you

We are part of the national knowledge and special advisory function, VISO in the National Board of Social Services. We have compiled a series of questions and answers.

Who do we advise?

We provide advice to professionals, citizens, and relatives regarding supportive measures for epilepsy. We offer advice by phone and through personal meetings at our location or, for example, at schools and residential facilities. We advise, for example:

  • Municipal employees/home advisors
  • Schools and educational institutions/mentors
  • Workplaces/mentors
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Citizens with epilepsy and their relatives

You are welcome to contact us for advice and consultations.

What do we advise on?

76,000 people have epilepsy. Many experience severe fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or learning new things. Epilepsy is more than just seizures. For many, the condition can have psychological and social consequences in daily life, making it difficult to navigate or learn to live with epilepsy and its effects.

We connect epilepsy to the problems seen in practice and provide tools and methods that can be used in everyday life.

We advise families and professionals in schools, job centers, and workplaces to understand the disease and its consequences. We contribute epilepsy-related knowledge in, for example, the assessment of a citizen’s situation and suggest measures that can be used to help the person with epilepsy in their daily life.

Who are we?

We are a VISO KAS provider for the National Board of Social Services and Housing, and since 2017, we have been part of a network under the national knowledge and special advisory organization, VISO, in the National Board of Social Services and Housing. All inquiries are referred locally through the Special Advisory Service. You do not need to be a patient at the Epilepsy Hospital, Filadelfia, to receive counseling.

Who do we collaborate with?

We collaborate with those who are relevant to the individual cases. We work with child and youth caseworkers, Pedagogical Psychological Counseling (PPR), support persons, kindergartens, schools, and educational institutions. We also collaborate with treating doctors and hospitals.

Special Counselling

You are welcome

There are different needs depending on whether you are a child, adolescent, or adult. No matter who you are, you are welcome with us.

Children with epilepsy

If you are a professional or a parent of a child with epilepsy, there may be many concerns about the child’s well-being, family life, and daily life while constantly trying to keep an overview.

We receive many inquiries about:

  • Academic and social challenges in school
  • School absenteeism
  • Severe fatigue

To make things work, it is important to learn to navigate around epilepsy.

Use our brochures on ‘Children and Epilepsy’ and ‘Children and Practical Advice.’

Young people with epilepsy

Young people with epilepsy want to live a completely normal youth life with parties, relationships, social activities, and sports. It can be challenging to decide how much friends, teachers, and classmates should know about the condition. It can also be difficult to take care of oneself when wanting to be just like everyone else.

We receive many inquiries about:

  • Concerns about demands, exercise, and loss of control during seizures
  • Fatigue related to daily and social activities
  • Study time, disability supplements in relation to student grants (SU), special educational support (SPS), etc.

Listen to our podcast, where other young people talk about their lives with epilepsy. Read our brochure on ‘Young People and Epilepsy.’

You are also welcome to contact us.

Adults with epilepsy

Many people with epilepsy manage to work under normal conditions, despite having a chronic condition they must consider. The epilepsy may be well-managed, and daily life may be organized so that epilepsy does not significantly affect their work life. There is a balance between work, leisure, and epilepsy.

We receive many inquiries about:

  • Concerns about work life
  • Fatigue and energy management
  • Driver’s licenses
