Conny Hjelm’s Research

In the Ph.D. project, Conny Hjelm investigates how nurses and patients experience the human conversation, and what characterizes the interaction between nurses and patients in such conversational practice.

Research in diakonia related to the Epilepsy Hospital shows that patients experience the human conversation during their stay at the Epilepsy Hospital as one that simultaneously addresses diagnosis-related topics and humane issues. This is a unique experience.

Nurses who engage in the human conversation experience increased integrity in their nursing work, which enhances job satisfaction.

Overall, the interaction between nurse and patient suggests that the human conversation helps reduce patients’ sense of alienation during their hospitalization at the Epilepsy Hospital.
