Treatment of epilepsy

Filadelfia’s Patient Hotel has 18 rooms. This means that patients and their relatives have the option to stay at the patient hotel, which is very close to the hospital. One of the child’s relatives can choose to stay overnight for free either in the child’s room or at the patient hotel.

There is public transportation with trains and buses within walking distance. We also have large parking lots nearby. There are Clever charging stations for electric cars at the Laboratory, Kolonivej 11, Dianalund.

Patient rights are our legal obligations towards you. These rights ensure an optimal process when you need to be examined and treated.

Medication is the most common treatment for epilepsy. 65% become seizure-free with the first or second drug.

Filadelfia treats both children and adults with a vagus nerve stimulator (VNS). It is an electrical stimulator that the doctor implants just under the collarbone. It sends small electronic signals to the brain via the vagus nerve at regular intervals. These signals can help to ease, shorten, or stop epileptic seizures.

Filadelfia has extensive experience in assessing whether VNS can help you. The implantation itself is performed at Rigshospitalet or Aarhus University Hospital. All children with VNS are followed up at Filadelfia. We provide treatment plans that include adjusting the stimulator for optimal treatment.

Many hours of evaluation precede a surgical intervention. This involves close interdisciplinary collaboration among doctors, neurophysiologists, neuropsychologists, radiologists, and neurosurgeons. A team of at least 10 specialists evaluates over the course of a year whether the patient is suitable for surgery. 

This process takes place in close interdisciplinary collaboration between Rigshospitalet and Filadelfia.

Traditionally, surgical treatment has been open surgery. Today, half of the operations are minimally invasive, using laser surgery. Each year, approximately 45 patients undergo surgery for epilepsy. About 60 percent become seizure-free.

At Filadelfia, we offer three forms of diet treatment for both children and adults. The treatment begins on an outpatient basis at the Epilepsy Hospital, where doctors examine the patient and have a preparatory conversation. Admission typically occurs from Monday to Friday.

The food contains large amounts of fat, adequate protein, and minimal carbohydrates. The diet produces ketones, which the brain uses as an energy source – helping to keep seizures at bay. It is very important to follow the diet closely. Half of the patients on diet treatment experience at least a 50% reduction in seizures.
