Regional School for Children with Special Needs for Grades 0-10

The school is for students with epilepsy or other neurological challenges.

A Great Place to Learn. Community and well-being are our core values. We understand that every student is unique. We strengthen the class community and create a calmer classroom environment, which helps us meet the diverse needs of our students.

We provide students with tools to master schoolwork and manage their individual difficulties. With over 25 years of experience in special education, we use an approach based on appreciative pedagogy and neuro-pedagogy.

The School for Children with Special Needs is for students who need a fresh start in a special school or for those who require a special school offer from the beginning of their education.

We have peace and space for deeper learning

We create time for deep focus and quality time with skilled teachers and educators. We teach the mandatory subjects of the public school curriculum and offer the public school final exams. As both students and parents, you may have many questions about the school – we have gathered some of them here.

What are the staff’s qualifications?

Most of our staff are trained school teachers. However, our team has a range of qualifications.

  • School teachers
  • Educators
  • Assistants
  • Audiologist
  • Medical secretary
  • Office assistant
  • Youth guidance counselor (UU-vejleder)

In addition to our regular staff, we also have professionals from the Epilepsy Hospital:

  • Neuropsychologists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Doctors

What is the structure of the school day?

The school day begins at 8:30 AM. The morning consists of three blocks of two lessons each. Between the blocks, there is a 20-minute recess and a 50-minute lunch/recess break, where after eating, students engage in physical activity and play in the schoolyard with various play equipment.

The educational staff supervise and participate in the recesses. This is an important part of the school’s observation of each student’s competencies.

We have a sports hall, a fitness center, and a large playground.

What subjects do we teach?

Students are taught the mandatory subjects of the public school curriculum based on the recommended hours by the Ministry of Children and Education. We offer individually tailored instruction in the classrooms. Additionally, we have the special option of workshop-based learning.

How to become a student

A student can be referred through the district school—the public school the student is affiliated with—or parents can use the free school choice option.

The municipality can also refer the student if special education is needed.

Filadelfia’s special school’s admissions committee assesses whether the program can meet the student’s needs.

Do you have an after-school program (SFO)?

Yes, we have an SFO for students from grades 0-6. We offer morning and afternoon SFO on school days from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. There is always educational staff available, providing various activities.

How does transportation work?

The district school or municipality must arrange for transportation to and from the school. Parents are required to cancel transportation in case of illness.

Parent Council

The Parent Council serves as a liaison to the school board, a bridge between parents and staff, and among the parents themselves. It is responsible for enhancing well-being in the classrooms.

The Parent Council initiates social events for the class both inside and outside of school. They handle invitations, planning, and delegating tasks such as shopping and setting up tables.

The Parent Council is involved in organizing the class’s communal activities, for instance, by managing collections for the class fund.

Prepared for the future

We boost motivation among the oldest students.

The school offers graduation exams and focuses on providing students with the necessary skills to complete an education.

Students in grades 8, 9, and 10 will have the opportunity for a practically oriented educational program, without compromising academic quality. The school ensures that students with learning difficulties due to epilepsy or cognitive challenges have optimal opportunities to receive a good education.

We provide a safe school environment where routines and predictability are key elements.

We prepare students for more than just education—also for functioning well in daily life.

Policies

Børneskolen has prepared a number of policies and plans to have guidelines for a good school day.
